I think decent/ascent rates and BO gas SAC's are the two most over looked things in dive planning. Case in point sound like the guy you were talking about did not even bother to check this ...

I am sure he never thought of it. He was also of the belief that both computers and desktop software are the spawn of the devil, so he only used a bottom timer and ratio deco to guide his dives.
