I heard about them on the Scuba Board Audio Blog. Very interesting. I sent Kevin Vaughn an email asking for more info.

Thanks very much.

Mentoring at-risk youth through scuba diving can really help disobedient teenagers to recover from troubled behaviors. At S.T.A.R.S. (Scuba Training At-Risk Students) they help at-risk youths to learn scuba diving, driving small boats, care for aquatic animals and help youths to make better decisions that affect their lives and empowers them to fulfill their dreams.

They are focused solely on at-risk youth (ages 13-17) with the goal to provide a positive diversionary activity incorporating scuba diving which reinforces and supports local academic achievement and career development. Candidates must be predetermined to exude traits qualifying them as “at-risk” teens and be nominated by local or civic authority figure. Here is a comprehensive online resource for anything you need to know about at-risk youth.
