Since I'm a believer in KISS and of UK origin:

Buoy Sink Air Clips

Buoy = check BC, inflation as required
Sink = check weight belt or equivalent
Air = obvious
Clips = SPG, Octopus etc all in place

With me the whole thing is irrelevant. I very seldom dive with a buddy. I almost always dive with an operator who provides a DM at no extra cost. I have a routine which starts at my toes and goes up to the top of my head. Then the DM or boat captain checks out the tank valve, sees to it that you have your reg in your mouth (not your snorkel), etc. Although one time they jovialy let me jump off without fins and another without reg in mouth (Hardy-har). I recovered quickly and didn't die either time.
