The simplest answer is look at a map.

Kahului is on the east coast of Maui. All the diving we've described previously is on the west coast. So are all the dive operators except one. And I think they only do shore diving at a couple of sites north of Kahului. Even the cruise divers that dock in Kahului get shuttled over to West Maui. Do you really want to drive over every day to dive? About 45mins. IIRC. Unless you want to get up pretty early, that limits access to the Kihei boats as most leave between 6-6:30AM to Molokini. They're smaller boats to launch from the ramp so the tradewinds beat them up pretty good coming back. Most afternoon boat dives off Maui are near Maui. Many of those are single dives - also expect those to be the Discover Dives/Cert dives so likely not the best of Maui.

The Kona Courtyard - evidently the King Kamehemeha although I did not know that until now - is in downtown Kona. It's an older hotel but I think it's pretty nice - they took a hit from a storm/tsunami? a few years ago so a lot of it was rebuilt. There's a shore dive right there at the pier. Jack's Diving Locker is a couple? blocks south for gear rental - they'll meet you at the pier for escorted dives. Five minutes drive north is the harbor described above where all the boats leave from. 10-15 mins. south is the largest cluster of shore dives on Kona. Plus there's all the restaurants, nightlife etc. in Kona within walking distance.

I'd go to Kona, not even a close choice. Even just shore diving is more accessible: http://www.shorediving.com/Earth/Hawaii/index.htm

As far as diving, both are equally good. There's virtually nothing you can see off Maui/Molokini also not seen of Kona - except things related to the crater itself such as the Backwall dive. Which is actually featureless just vertical. There is a Manta cleaning station off West Maui, shore accessible with a long swim if you know where to get in - some boat operators do it also. I know someone who saw three being cleaned there once.

Of course the Kona Manta Dive is famous - my buddy counted 20 there one night. He said it's a rush as they swim right at your light then veer off in the last second straight in front of you - brace yourself - the surge just about knocks you over - and they're 15-20' across.

A few days later off South Kona, my buddy was surrounded by spinner dolphins for part of their dive - several hundred of them are visible in the video. In mid-July but I don't think it's seasonal.

You can also do the Black Water dive (Pelagic Magic) there with Jack's or KDC (or others) http://www.jacksdivinglocker.com/charters2/PelagicMagic.htm There's nothing like that off Maui afaik.

The Hammerheads off Molokai - while impressive - don't always show up. It's blue water so not much to see if they don't. It's also $200 to find out. And a pretty rough ride - I think only Lahaina Divers tries it now. The Cathedrals off Lanai are the other "signature" dive but they're pretty featureless too - just impressive inside. There's diveable lava tubes off Kona also afaik.

Turtles are a given off either island, they live on the Carpathia off Maui - but you can also snorkel with them at Kahuluu Beach Park on Kona. Reef sharks are pretty common off either island. About the only reason I can think of to pick Maui is that the shore dive entries there are generally easier. And there's more of them.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Maui diving. I just never realized how good Kona diving is also until recently.

Plus on your non-diving day go see the Volcano erupt. Can't do that on Maui...

Need to resurrect this thread since I'm looking to finally book my first trip to Maui for June. I have 5 Free nights at a Marriott but only Category 4 so I HAVE to stay at the Courtyard near the airport. That being said, who should I dive with and how feasible/easy of a drive will it be to get to the dive boat considering we aren't staying in maybe the best location for them? Guessing we are going to be hopping on a highway?

I would love to do a Manta Dive if they have one. I've also seen people talking about Molokini Crater and it looks interesting, is it worth it? Any other great dive spots not to miss? I'm in severe dive withdrawal, it has been awhile and Hawaii has always seemed kinda overwhelming to me for some reason. Any great tips for things to see on land and great restaurants? I pretty much need someone to just plan my trip for me!:D

I guess I could also go to Kona and stay at the Courtyard there too. I want to dive but also see land attractions so not sure which one is best?

i too live in Kahului and drive to the shore dive locations. The good think about staying in Kahului, is its right next to Costco, Wallmart and other places that make it easy to get the stuff you need. We are about 35 minutes from Makena and about 40 minutes to Kaanapali. If you take a boat out of Kihei Harbor, it about 30 minutes especially that early in the morning. The Courtyard in Kahului has also just opened so its brand new. Hope that helps.

And if you really want to have a blast when you get there , go scooter diving with scubahawk27. Here is there website www.mauiscooterdivers.com . It's like riding a Harley under water, such a blast. I cannot wait to get back there.

Just watch your elevation...the south road gets over 4000ft on the way to Volcanoes Nat'l Park. Saddle road is even higher, I believe.
Maybe I didn't make that clear enough but you're absolutely correct. My assumption would be that the OP will be on the Kona/LAX direct flight which leaves at 10:30PM so they'll have all day to sightsee.

Plus on your non-diving day

Thanks for the help everyone! This sucks, it's not the ideal situation for where to stay. Given my limited options of hotels (for a free stay) Kona looks like the best choice for diving conveniences being close. The Courtyard there seems decent enough, more of a beach front location, I'd be interested in diving with Jack's Diving Locker which is so close... But the airfare is between $600-700 per person which I don't think I can stomach when I can go to Maui for just under $760 for both of us for the same time period! My first perk of living on the west coast and I intend to take advantage of that!

I would really rather stay along the coast and closer to the dive operators on Maui but this is supposed to be a cheaper getaway for us. So if we stay at the airport Courtyard it's going to take us approx 30-45 mins to get to the dive boats in Kihei Harbor. Any recommendations on good dive operators out of there? Thanks for the reminders about elevation, if we do any sightseeing like that I figure I'd plan that for the beginning of the trip.

Do look at a map: Kahului is nowhere near the east side of Maui (Hana is the east side). The drive from Kahului to the far west shore (Kaanapali and points north/south of it) isn't that bad, and getting down to Kihei for things like the Hellcat and fish caves is pretty quick.

Also, Kahului has the distinct benefit of being near the excellent food at Hali'maile General Store, and if you want to take a non-diving day on the east side to explore Hana and the 7 pools hike (and it will take a full day just to drive there and back with several hours of looking around), Kahului is better than the far west side. I'm not sure if Travassa Hana's spa will make appointments for non-guests, but if they do I cannot recommend them enough for a non-diving day massage; the view of the Pacific from their pool/hot tub is stunning.

Go and enjoy the cheaper trip for what it is; spend some of what you save on enjoying the trip (food, dives, lavish fun). If you really want to come back and stay right on the coast in Kannapali or Kapalua, you can do it on another trip. Unlike Oahu or Kauai, Maui and the Big Island are easier to digest in multiple trips.

Out of Kihei/south Maui, I've been happy with Mike Severns (for boat diving) and Shaka Doug and scubahawk27 for shore/scooter diving (both on scubaboard). Ed Robinsons and B&B tend to get recommended a lot, too.

It's on the east side of the small part...:D

Still a 1/2 hr.+ drive to the nearest boat/shore dives.
Any recommendations on good dive operators out of there?
B&B Scuba for Kihei boat dives, the others ^ make my list also. Maui Dreams Dive Co. for shore diving/tank rentals in Kihei. Or the Maui Dive Shop locations. Shaka Doug for escorted shore dives.

There's also Maui Diamond II out of Ma'alea Harbor - probably the closest boat from Kahului actually.

In Lahaina, Lahaina Divers has the big boats, Extended Horizons is smaller. Hawaiian Rafting Adventures is another Lanai option from there. EH also does shore diving in West Maui, so does Tiny Bubbles. Up in Kapalua there's Kapalua Dive Co. for shore dives in Kapalua Bay.

Thanks everyone for their help so far! I kept going back and forth on splitting our time between the two islands, then I focused on Kona for the whole trip. After seeing the dollar signs adding up with all the things we want to do we decided to use our airline miles for the whole trip which dictated our dates and splitting it between the two islands was kind of forced upon us for free flights!

So finally we are officially booked to start out in Maui for 3 nights (no diving there unfortunately) and then heading over to Kona for 5 nights. I have to do some major alterations to my "itinerary" however now that we won't be in Kona for the whole trip and I already had everything planned out! We want to head to the Mauna Kea Summit at the very beginning of our Kona portion before any dive days. I'm thinking of 3 days diving (probably with JDL) or possibly 2 days if they let us squeeze in 4 dives on one day and 2-3 on the 2nd. Absolutely doing the Manta dive, maybe Pelagic Magic. Do I need to worry about elevation if we head to Volcano Nat'l Park at the end of the trip or should I plan on doing this at the beginning?

Had no idea how expensive Hawaii was going to be all around (even with 8 nights of free hotel and free airfare)! Guess this is why we've done liveaboards lately but I am looking forward to the diversity of the big island and seeing Maui as well!
