My girlfriend and I want to take a trip to the Bahamas. I'll be doing some diving while she relaxes, and I told her I'd post on here to get some ideas on the best places to stay (not necessarily dive, as that's an afterthought).
I'm guessing Nassau or Freeport, but what good/bad experiences have any of you had in the islands?

You need to provide your definition of "best", like for starters do you like big hotels/resorts, or someplace smaller. Someplace busy in the middle of stuff, or quiet and out of the way. Do you need shopping. Etc.

Just retunred from there. Stay away from Atlantis, very expensive and the worst service I have ever experianced. We dove with Stuarts Cove, no complaints there, but suggest making reservations on-line it's cheaper. If you are just looking for a place to stay, I heard several people say the Holiday Inn was low cost and close to the dive shop.

Hope it helps..

She wants something with a lot of people around. I'm guessing that can be interpreted as shopping, etc.

If you really want to see the REAL Bahamas stay away from Nassau or Freeport.Do yourself a favor and go to one of the family (out) Islands ie: Eleuthera, Harbour Island or the Exumas. Your girlfriend will love you for making that decision.

Sit down together and make a list of items each of you wants. Then cross off things that are conflicting and/or unimportant. You can start your search from there. We can't help without you giving us more parameters.

Big beach? Private Beach? Beach unimportant?
Multiple pools & jacuzzi?
Spa services?
Romantic or sporty?
Budget?
Casino onsite? Nearby? "Who cares?"
Small & quaint or big & fancy?
Local owner/operator or big chain?
Dive service onsite?
Multiple restaraunts or no restaraunt?
Oceanfront or across the street?
All Inclusive or "european plan?"
Activities (kayaks, sailboats, snorkling, disco, etc.) on site? nearby?

I stayed at the place right next to Atlantis last year. Pretty nice place. We were 100 feet from the opening of Atlantis for about $100 less per night. Right next to shopping, gambling, and a few dive shops. BTW...if she wants to go scuba diving, they run a course in this hotel that gives them a down and dirty 2 or 3 hour course in scuba diving. They can then go diving with you at one of the local spots, Blue Hole I believe. Thier theory is, the diving is only in 30 feet of water and not much can happen. They are under a DM's strict supervision, but you could dive with her.
Anyway, it's a great place to stay to be in the middle of everything (which it sounds like you want) but not break the bank doing it. I will warn you however that it is EXPENSIVE to eat/drink anywhere on the island. Plan on a minimum of 35 per person, for dinner. Also, the Atlantis buffet at night is GREAT. Besides the diving, the aquarium and grounds at Atlantis are one of the greatest attractions I've ever seen. It's size and beauty are amazing. Don't miss it!
Enjoy...
Bill

P.S. If you want the name of the hotel...email me at goodman770@yahoo.com. I can get it from my girlfriend.
