Hi guys,

I'm going to be getting a Hero 4 Silver soon and am looking for opinions on which red filter to pickup. I have no immediate plans to buy video lights. I plan to use in mainly in Grand Cayman (blue water). I dive a lot here in SoCal, so I'd like the option of using it here as well (blue/green - green) water.

Thanks!

I suggest a system that I use- Backscatter Flip3.1. I had a Polar pro but I'm more pleased with Backscatter.

Does the 4 need a housing with a flat port like the 3 needed to compensate for the fisheye effect?

I tried the polarpro some time ago but i now use the adapter from Snakeriverprototyping with the urpro redfilter. In my opinion the best red filter for the go pro. I prefer real glass red filters and not plastic. In the video below i used the red filter in all the wideangle shots.

Ok, wow. Some of the best underwater video I've ever seen from a GoPro.

I see your list of gear in the Vimeo specs, what about typical image size & frame rate? Is the original video you shot 4k30 or some other size/fps?

Do you use LCD BackPac with your GoPros to frame your shots, or just point and pray?

I use 2 gopro, one of them is the hero 3+ black and the other a hero 3 black. So no 4k@30fps. I shoot on 2.7k@30fps. And for macro set it to medium view. In my opion you should never use 60fps unless you really want slomo. Else only use 30fps. Why? Because the sensor gets more light. At 60fps the shutter goes rapid and there is less light for the sensor then at 30fps. 15 would be even better, but hey that isnt fluid anymore.

Thats the reason why timelapses looks great. Sensor opens only with intervals.

And yes i use a lcd screen. If you want good footage always use a screen. Drains battery but can be changed. Please make sure you set the setting from the lcd to sleep asap.

A slightly more basic question - do I stick with the gopro 4's original housing, but gopro's dive housing, or go with some other version?

I have them both but i use the housing that came with the hero 3 (dive housing). It is more durable and rugged and the rating is 60 meters. I sometimes video wrecks which are beyond the 40 meters mark. However the buttons on the hero 4 housing are nicer to press i think and a little big bigger, so easier underwater.

All the current crop of GoPros are dive ready. No different housing is needed; the separate dive housing was for the 1 and 2 series because the stock spherical lens port did a lousy job with underwater filming. They figured out that a flat lens port was best, starting with v3 they made it the default.

FYI I also use a Backscatter Flip filter. I used the old version with my HERO2, and got the newer 3.1 version for my recently purchased HERO4 Silver.

I was not happy with the tint of the PolarPro when I tried it with my HERO2. It seemed a little too red, and always seemed to leave the video a little less naturally-colored than the Backscatter filters do.

I have yet to play with all the different shallow/dive/deep tints that came with the Flip 3.1 setup I bought.
