OK, I got the skinny on the cable gate across the tramway leading to Buford from Paul Hanson, the FWC officer who left his card while I was diving. He says that under no circumstances are you to drive around the gate and down the tramway. If you are caught, not only is a fine involved, you will be charged with misdemenor trespassing as long as a search of your vehicle turns up nothing that shouldn't be there. If you have something in your vehicle that shouldn't be there, eg.: firearms out of hunting season, alcohol, drugs, or fish that you aren't licensed to catch, etc., you will be charged with felony trespassing and probably have your vehicle impounded. They are pretty serious about enforcing it and it would really suck if a few scofflaws ruined it for everyone by getting it shut down. Just goes to show that you shouldn't listen to just anyone to get the facts. The diver I talked to remarked that they (FWC) didn't mind if you just drove back to drop your gear, then drove out again to park outside the gate. He said he wasn't going to walk all that way to dive. If you're going to dive it, do us all a favor and get a cart or wagon to make the trip.

I really wish I would have seen this dive report before I went there last weekend. I went to the gate you weren't supposed to :dork2:! Then I found just how fast you can disappear in the mud if you step in the wrong place. There's nothing like being buried waist deep in mud instantly!

That being said, it was a spectacular dive well worth the hike involved.

The thread is over a year old and some things have changed. Since some people decided to bypass the cable and continue to drive down the tram road FWC has installed a wooden fence/barricade and pushed up large dirt berms on either side of the fence.

I can do you one better on the mud trip though.....try walking it in a drysuit wearing doubles and carrying a deco bottle. 50' from the water and I'm face down in the mud sucking O2 listening to Narcosis say "are you OK?" and it wasn't really very wet either.

I'm glad I went to scout the site first so I wasn't strapped with any equipment. My dive buddies were rather upset though, they didn't have their cameras with them at the time!

Just an FYI, with all of the rain we've had it will be very difficult to make it through the swamp part, there are 79 different species of mosquitos in Florida and 90% of them are in that swamp ( I kid you not ) plus the assorted snakes and such, you can very easily get lost on the walk back through the swamp and help is a very long way away if something goes wrong so please be careful.

I want to do this dive this winter. I know someone that I am going to conn into escorting me to it. (Mark) I'm hoping to do cavern next month and then I will be all set to go trek through the jungle.

i wish the person well that is going to take on buford this time of year with the mozzies out there....they tend to be bigger than the rest of america in this swamp at this time of year....plus with all the rain we have had i think the pond shall be as brown as the day we tried to film it in summer.....!
