In my opinion, anyone ....... at anytime...... can dive anywhere they want as long as the site is not under the legal control of others.
And in a cave environment anyone at any time will likely die without proper training, skills and equipment. But live your life man, it’s your life, no matter how short you want it to be.

Does infringing on someones rights include the rights of the recovery team members that get called and asked to drop whatever they were doing to go pull a dead person out of a cave? I've been called and asked to do that a few times, it's never a pleasant task.

I'd argue that your rights to go diving in any site at any time without adequate training end where the rights of the all volunteer recovery team begin, especially when history shows that people that lack training for that particular environment have a high fatality rate.

Anyone who knows me knows my reply would have been way, way, way longer about this facet of the conversation which has been weighing on me.

I suggest you simply read what Ken said about 100 times and you'll get the exact same information.

The answer to the question in the title is No.

Thankfully in Ireland you’re free to roam, dive, climb whatever, mostly. But there’s always control freaks and rule makers who hate to see a free thinker and doer. It makes them uncomfortable. As for searching for you in the case of an accident, Not once in 50 years of been involved in search and rescue on land and water, have I heard the motive of the victim been questioned. S&R is voluntary, people are free to take part or stay at home. As for the OP if they know the person they’re dealing with and confident in their skills, I wouldn’t think twice about it.

Are YOU a certified cave diver?

This is the reason I moved to Darwinism.

Years ago, I used to get really upset of stupid decisions divers would make that would get themselves killed.

Diving rebreathers without training. Cave diving without training. Diving deep without training….

It all really affected me and I beat a drum louder than anyone about safety and getting proper instruction. I’ve even offered instruction for free to try and save lives. None of it works. The stupid will always be stupid until they are too dead to be stupid anymore, which is just stupid.

With no experience necessary at all, someone can legally go buy a 190mph motorcycle and go for the ride of their life at top speed. Their chances of survival are probably as likely as someone with no experience going cave diving. Just because you can try it, doesn’t mean you should. But, I don’t care anymore. Darwin can sort them out.

The caves in Florida are unlike any we have in Ireland/UK, or for most of Europe for that matter.

They're very easy to access and they go back a long way, literally miles of tunnels with all sorts of conditions. Planning is a massive part of diving there with various hard stops: turn times, thirds, backups, etc. It's nothing like a sea dive and if you screw up there will be consequences.

Cannot recommend it highly enough though. It's an amazing change from our conditions.

More diving than you’ve had hot dinners
Probably not, but it is irrelevant. Thanks for responding.

Quick question, I'm going for my Cavern certification next week and it got me thinking. Is it legal, ok or whatever for my instructor to escort me on a cave dive? Of course assuming we have all the required equipment. I was thinking that I'd want to get a feel for it.

Rarely! I am primarily a cold water Northwest diver and caves are not normal here. I still maintain that any diver.... anytime..... has the right to dive anywhere they choose.... anytime..... as long as they are not clearly trespassing or infringing on anyone's rights.
The OP asked if it was LEGAL for him to be escorted by an instructor on a cave dive.... My responses were based solely on my opinion of whether or not is was LEGAL. For those of you cave divers whose nerves seem to have been stricken by that response, please educate me. Is what the OP asking illegal? My guess is that there are probably some caves where there may actually be laws and ordinances that apply, but that for the most part what the the OP is proposing is not ILLEGAL.

Of course it does. Doing anything ill-advised, foolhardy, stupid, etc...... that can place another's life in danger is infringing on their rights and is NOT OK.
