The term Diopter is typically used for describing the magnifying power of a lens

.......That's not the way most use it-ie most (these days would)say(example) 'had me that diopter over there.'-meaning 'hand me that macro lens over there.'..........AND, 'in the optics world', WE use it as THE power of a spherical(either convex or concave) or cylindrical lens---have no idea what you mean by 'used for the lens itself.'.......Please explain to me what you mean by that latter quote...
 
I meant that today (as you pointed out) most people call the actual physical object (the lens) a diopter.

... getting back to the focussing problem....

I also had a problem with focussing my 60mm lense until I got a focus light. It was very frustrating. A focus light solved it all :D
