I always use the macro mode, auto focus, and F8 aperture for greatest deph of field. It works pretty well that way. Just make sure that you have it in macro mode, and set the zoom to wide angle.

I have the Canon S400. I used to have the same problem until I started using a focus light. It makes a HUGE difference! See below.
