I second the go slow advice. In my limited experience, I have found it's always easier to take your time and equalize gently then to feel rushed and then feel pain and have to go back up a bit. And you gain the skill of constant communication with your buddy as to where you are with your descent. You should be comfortable and not fighting issues when you reach the starting dive depth.
