My wife and I are wanting to go somewhere other than the Caribbean this fall, and Hawaii came up.
I've browsed the Hawaii forum here a bit, but I've still got some questions.
When is the best time to visit Hawaii? Our plan is for sometime in Oct or November. Is this still a good time?
There is a direct flight from Denver to Honolulu, so that's where we are most likely going to land. Makes a seven hour flight out of what would otherwise be a 12 hour (or more) day. Is it easy to get a hop to the other islands? I have visions of TC's chopper in my head (Magnum PI).
What island has the best boat diving? We were thinking Maui, but being clueless, we are open to suggestions. Shore diving we are not so keen on. Did some of that in Monterey CA, and are a bit less than excited about surf entry, but maybe a shore dive or two there can change our minds.
Boat diving seems to be a bit pricey. Is $120 for a two-tank pretty typical? I can pay it if it is, but it's a good bit higher than what we are used to. I don't want to fall for the tourist trap pricing, but I'm quite willing to pay fair market value out there.
Most of our diving has been the typical 80/80 Caribbean stuff. How is Hawaii different? I know there's a lot more fish to see and fish we'll never see anywhere else. Is the water much colder?
Are there any dive sites that non-locals should probably avoid? I read the story about the Spitting Caves - any others to be wary of? Molokini looks very nice, but how difficult is the back wall?
We've got some experience with current and heavy (but still divable) seas. What are typical sea conditions like? Should I be packing lots of dramamine?
Thanks for any advice you care to dispense.
