There are several threads that are also about this topic (in case you want to delete this one and continue in another no problem). Though, I didn't find a specific discussion on this
I am a beginner, I have OW and I am now completing AOW
What advice would you give to control and reduce the air consumption during dives?
Thanks

Stop sculling with your hands. You can't do that until, as @scrane pointed out, you get your trim and buoyancy under control.

Thank you all for the good advice

Here is a post by the Chairman I found which I will print and frame like a college degree haha

  • Bad Trim
    • Great trim is the foundation on which true neutral buoyancy is built.
    • Horizontal trim is the "Scuba Position"
    • The physics of diving is just not that hard, but if you don't understand, you can't dive it.
    • The Buddha hover is a scam
  • Fly Swatting
    • Divers often resist the Scuba Position
    • They scull to
      • Stay upright
      • Stop sinking
      • because they feel out of control
        • They are!!!
    • Instead, sculling only
      • Silts out the place
      • Scares the fish away
      • Creates more CO2 thereby increasing your need to suck air
    • Learn to fold your hands together.
  • Going too damn fast!
    • Learn to Zen
    • Learn to Frog Kick
      • Flutter kicking wastes energy creating more CO2, making you breathe more
      • Flutter kicking silts out the place
    • Take time to examine your surroundings!
      • You'll see far, far more
      • You'll stay down longer too!
    • The more you exert yourself, the more CO2 you create and the more you have to breathe to get rid of it!
      • Relax
      • Have fun
      • You're already in paradise, so slow down!
  • Learn how to handle currents!
    • Dodge
    • Duck
    • Dip
    • Dive
    • Dodge

So much of the trim and buoyancy part comes with repetition, gradual decreasing of weight maybe, trying different things. I think you are hard pressed to get really comfortable diving every now and then, go somewhere and live in the water for a week. For me it was Curacao diving at least 4 times a day for a week, huge difference in dive profiles from beginning to end of the week.
