Which would you advice a miserly digital newbie to pick?

I absoutely love my Nikon 4300 camera!!! I abuse it hard and it's taking it very well. It also fits in my pocket, which is something that I really appreciate (my old camera was a Sony DSC-f505v and the 4300's much better!)

there's also a good selection of dive housings for the nikon 4300 camera.

Ditto the recommended 4300..........its cheap now, about $300, comes with rechargable batteries, and the Fantasea housing is about $180........

Nikon 2100 housing is only $99 now too!
