Lisa, I'm impressed that you can say, "the mouth area looks right." I can't even see the critter at all.

I had to look twice too Walter, plus having a big screen and pressing my nose on it helps :D

These are old pics from the Philippines but I think they are the same, just different color. As Leesa said, they are from the Squat Lobster Family.

Thanks, I thought that was algae. I can see it now, but I still can't see its mouth.

I sent the picture to John Hoover today and he suggested Galathea spinosorostris as a possibility but a positive id can't be made from the picture alone. He said G. spinosorostris is known thoughout the Indo-Pacific including Hawaii so it may well be the same as yours.
