I knew you were going to ask that. Unfortunately I can't help ya. My Dive Rite BPW setup is in California and I'm in Idaho. I have my Transpac with me but that doesn't help you any.

I have the old 30-lbs Venture, the old 40-lbs Venture and the newish 40-lbs Venture 360. The old 40-lbs Venture came with my Transpac which I bought first, the 360 came with the BPW and Transplate harness. Then I found an LDS that had old stock 30-lbs Venture wing. I switched & swapped all these things out between the Transpac and Transplate to make sure that they all fit & worked. The BPW and STA (or SMP as in Dive Rite parlance) were bought in January of 2009. I don't know if DR had changed the dimensions since then or even before then.

As far as tropical diving goes, I have yet to do any so I can't tell. However, for temperate diving in California, I noticed that the 30-pounder vents easier than the 40-pounder. Can't really tell the difference in performance (i.e. more or less drag, affects the trim differently, etc.) other than easier venting with the 30-pounder.

I do use the 40-pounder when I go scallop/snails harvesting because these bad boys are heavy as heck and I don't want to carry a lift bag.

good info on the 30lb vs 40lb.
thanks

Hello

I have the same issue as the OP. My setup consists of: DR BP, DR (Edit) Voyager EXP and the DR STA.
The STA studs fit the wing grommet spacing as well as the BP spacing. The bottom end of the STA clears the wing, however, the top overlaps quite a bit with the underside of the wing. If I moved the wing up onto the 2nd set of holes, than the top would clear but the bottom end would interfere. pics attached showing the STA interference at the top of the wing. Please advise a fix - I wouldn't want to hack a piece of equip to make it work.
Thanks

Interesting. Mine doesn't have that much stuck out either from the top or the bottom, regardless of which holes to use. I wonder if somebody had changed dimensions? Next time when I'm back to Cali, I'll take photos of my rig.

Hi Guys,

On the new Voyager EXP wing, there will be some play in the fit and the STA will overlap the wing as shown in Dann's photos. However, this is not a wear point or an issue with pinching. We have the same rigs set up in house and several of us dive this for our open water rig a lot and haven't gotten any issues with wear and tear. The STA is not designed to fit inside the wing.

However, if after diving the set up you start experiencing wear and tear in that area, give us a shout. We will gladly take care of you.

Please note: for transport, Dive Rite recommends that any STA be removed from a rig before placing the BC in a duffle bag, etc. Otherwise, please carry the BC intact over a shoulder. STA's are not intended to be packed inside a duffle or other dive bag along with a wing.

I hope this helps,
Kathleen

Hi Kathleen

I'll give it a shot. However, I can't even tighten the STA without sandwiching the wing between the STA and the BP. It's physicaly impossible to tighten the STA w/o pinching the wing. I managed to pull on the wing to go over the top of the STA, however, the edge of the STA now cuts into the underside of the wing. It's too much stress on the material (wing) to go in the water without thinking the STA will not cut into the bladder.

It doesn't need the STA per se. Just make the tank stay in place more instead of having a bit of lateral shifting movement. And it adds about maybe 1.5lbs of weight.

oh okay... ill try it without and see how it goes.

Hi all,

O/P here. It turns out that my Venture Wing did in fact have a "quirk". Must have been the "runt" of the older model litter!

Kathleen and company stepped right up and took care of the issue after confirming the problem.

Superior customer service and a big thank you to them!!

Now if only D/R made a thin lumbar pad that mounted to their plate with book screws instead of that big "pillow" style you have to thread and weave....?
