When ascending from a deep dive, I make myself ever so slightly negative as I'm getting up near 50' or so, which is where i notice that "postive buoyancy runaway" starts for my weighting/profile. I like to fin my way up, with my inflator in my hand if I need a puff. Usually I don't, b/c slightly negative at 50' turns into slightly positive at 30 and above. Much easier than dumping air frantically as you ascend. YMMV.
