Diving in Cozumel but traveling thru Cancun.
Our return flight is early morning so rather than risk missing the plane, we plan to take the ferry/bus back to Cancun the night before.
Looking for recommendations for a hotel somewhere near Cancun airport.

You might check out Playa del Carmen. I assume you are taking the ferry over from CZM on your way to the airport. You can grab a cab from PDC, and an overnight stay in PDC can be a lot of fun. A great variety of eateries there.

PDC is another option for our overnight. Any recommendations on where to stay there?

Personally, if you overnight in PDC, stay close to the bus station at 5th and Juarez (one block from the ferry terminal). Staying close to the bus terminal will allow you to use the ADO to the airport. We like Hotel Lunata on 5th. Call it 4 blocks from the bus terminal, but the stairs can be a bitch if you are toting a bunch of luggage.

The Courtyard Marriott is close to the airport on Hwy 307. They offer free shuttle service to and from the airport. I have stayed there often.

We have dived in many places but strange as it may seem, this is our first trip to Mexico.
Jet Blue round trip from Orlando for less than 300 was hard to pass up!
We have tacked on two days to the end of the trip to do the "yankee tourist" thing. (I'm from the south)
I know I initially asked about hotels but if there was something you wanted to see in either Cancun or Playa del Carmen, what woud it be?

If you have never dove in a cenote, now is your chance. It is nothing like you have ever seen before.

If you are trying to kill a non-diving day, I'd recommend Xcaret Theme Park.

Check out the tours on Playa del Carmen info and Tours and Excursions Riviera Maya | Alltournative Tours Riviera Maya Not expensive and a great way to spend a day.

Now if you are really flush with cash, this is the way to see Chichen Itza, Airplane Workshop Mechanics Airplane Tours from Playa del Carmen to Chichen Itza Mayan Ruins, Holbox
