I always tow mine, it is the law in CT and RI. I usually make my dives where I am travelling from point A to B. I would not recommend clipping it to your gear. If you get in a tangle, or it catches on an obstruction, you are now clipped to the problem. I use one of the yellow reels that were linked to above. Cheap and easy to replace. When diving from a stationary place like a boat or dock, you can run the flag from the boat or anchor it. A good thing you might want to try out in a nice safe environment is learning to clear the line from your legs or tank. keeping the line so you are towing it rather than wearing it may take a bit of practice.
