I did a dive at a place I call Linda's Rock(If I name things after my wife she let's me go diving and fishing) This is a place where we fish and I lost a couple lobsta traps 3 years ago, I still hope to stumble into one of the traps.
Another reason for the dive was to check the vis, the dive with @AfterDark and @formernuke in Woods Hole last week had such lo vis day, just wanted to check again. Still not sure why the vis sucked in WH but it was an incoming tide with a west to east current coming from buzzards bay thru woods hole into vineyard sound, so this time the dive was on a falling tide approaching low, with east to west current. As expected the clean water from Nantucket sound made for a good vis dive, more than 10'. Linda's rock is about 3 miles east of woods hole.
Also as part of this dive I wanted to increase my anchor scope a bit and observe what effect it would have on the anchor hold on the bottom, and video this for the benefit of one of my dive buddies, who had questions.
So in 32 fsw it was about 115' of anchor line, so about 3.5X scope. There are sources on the internet that recommend 5X or even 7X scope and certainly depending on the situation the need varies, but for my 23' boat in sandy conditions, for 2 hours, this was plenty. More scope would not improve the anchor hold in this case. If you watch the video(I hope it works) you can see the anchor chain is in the sand and hardly moving, even tho the current is pretty strong on the surface(and as expected, the current is less but still strong on the bottom). In addition to the current is a SSE wind creating greater pull on the boat.
(is a 344MB MPEG video file too big?)
