One of our best diving experiences was on a liveaboard from Port Hardy, we were in Johnson Strait between Malcom Island and Alert Bay, and saw a pod of four killer whales during our dive. After surfacing they hung around the boat for topside pictures. The diving off Vancouver Island from Nanaimo North is fantastic.

Speaking of liveaboards off Vancouver Island, any recommendations? I've looked at the Nautilus Explorer's site, but was looking for shorter trips than 10 days. Maybe around 4-6 days?

You'll get better options doing one of the land-based resorts. Some offer 3 or more dives daily at reasonable rates, and you have a more flexible schedule.

I'd recommend checking out resorts in Port Hardy (I'm heading up to The Hideaway at the end of August for a few days), Barkley Sound (Rendezvous Lodge), or Quadra Island (Abyssal Charters). Those are all well-run dive operations in excellent locations.
