Coast Guard: Man Dies After Dive Off Coast Of St. Marys

POSTED: Tuesday, December 30, 2008
UPDATED: 3:14 pm EST December 30, 2008
For the second time in 10 days, a diver has died off the coast of northeast Florida and southeast Georgia.

The Coast Guard said a man was scuba-diving Saturday from the Mayport-based Reef Raider II in the waters off St. Marys.

The diver, whose name has not been released, came up to the boat and collapsed, apparently from decompression sickness. The diver was dead by the time the vessel got to shore.

On Dec. 20, Jordan Anqyalfy was found unresponsive at the bottom of the ocean about 25 miles east of St. Augustine. Anqyalfy, who was described as experienced diver was pulled up and given CPR, but could not be revived.

The 44-year-old man ran out of oxygen, the Coast Guard said.

A scuba diver died early Sunday morning when the Coast Guard said he apparently ran out of oxygen while diving 160 feet below the surface, about 45 miles east of Brunswick.

Petty Officer 1st Class Michael Comes, based in the Coast Guard's office in Charleston, S.C., said the 44-year-old man was pulled to the surface by another diver.

The crew of the charter boat, based in Mayport, performed CPR on the man but they were unable to revive him, Comes said.

The victim was pronounced dead after the charter returned to Mayport, Comes said. His name was not available Tuesday night.

This is sad news. Does anyone have a clue what site they were at that's 160 feet deep? I've never dove in the Jacksonville - St. Augestine area. I've been in the Daytona - New Symerna area though.

If he was found unresponsive at the bottom, then brought up, it was not DCS... There is a lot of information missing, and it is too soon to talk about.

It's probably pretty rare to simply drop dead upon surfacing because of DCS. Just from reading the first story, it sounded more like breath holding on ascent, but you called it (unresponsive at bottom does not = DCS) either way.

He was also apparently using "oxygen" (which he ran out of). Oxygen + 160ft = Big Trouble.

I'm amazed that it was not mentioned that the waters were "shark infested"

These reporters are a bunch of monkies, how can he be "found unresponsive at the bottom of the ocean" and "came up to the boat and collapsed"....if this was aviation, they would claim he didn't file a flight plan either....

Sounds like he was diving outside his limits, and his buddy, who knows where he/she was?
