From the Saturday Jan 13, 2007 Maui News:

Waihee -- A 56 year-old man was pronounced dead Thursday after attempts to revive him failed in the Roundtables area at Waihee, ..... The man had been diving in the area, said Battalion Chief Jeff Shaffer. He said the main was on the beach and unresponsive when firefighters were called to the scene about 5:30 p.m.
(Although Maui News has a website, the article doesn't appear on it yet).

That area, just north of Wailuku, is not a popular tourist destination so the "diving" may have been freediving spearfishing. Maui News doesn't always distinguish between spearfishing with just a mask and snorkel vs. scuba with a tank.
