I assume a boat dead in the water is going to float the same direction divers are going to float. Bad timing on the stride without an aggressive stride and I can see how rough sees could end up diver under boat. Glad someone noticed. So I don't drop on someone I look for the guy in front of me to pop up. If he didn't would like to think I would pause on the platform...

The boats I have dived off of, if it isn't a hot drop, have always asked me to turn around and signal that I am OK after I have popped back up.

That is an unwise assumption. the day the diver was injured was rough and windy. a boat that is not under power is going to be moving at whatever speed (velocity really) that the wind dictates. The current is really of no concern because the instant the diver touches the water, he will be subject to the same current as the boat. a boat can be moving along at 3 mph (at least) from wind alone. You step off the back, get distracted for a moment, and the boat moves over your head and the prop(s) come crashing down into your head.

It is much safer if the boat is still moving forward when the diver enters off the stern, but this is not really practical with a bunch of divers because they will be spread out.
