Yeah, diving to 50m on air after a few beers is nice combination of bad ideas. Nothing to indicate disorientation. Lots of signs of standardization of deviance. He was probably just narced out of his mind and wanted to kep pushing the limit…

Sad news.
Plan to descend half way to the wreck.
Deep diving on air.
Twice the alcool legal driving limit.
Getting distracted ….

Looks like the diving in the blue hole in Egypt famous place diving there to say I have been there. Some do not come back. Nothing said about deco plan surface support and the sort only one extra tank at 5 meters. Bounce dive to 50m to be half way to the wreck.

While I believe nobody goes diving to hurt himself a plan should be behind all diving.

At twice the legal limit, he was narced out of his mind before getting in the water.

If this is true then the title of the post is unfair… because it insinuates sheer callousness on the buddy’s part.

Smyth began following Pattinson down, aware they were well past their limits, and into territory where the oxygen in their tanks turned toxic and could cause seizures, and they would start to be “narced” – where the nitrogen they were breathing caused disorienting narcosis.

By the time he hit 64m, Smyth was still 5-10m above Pattinson, and made the desperately difficult decision to stop, and swim for the surface.

165 feet on air, with no planned deco. . . Sorry for the loss, but you can't fix stupid
