Have fun,

Hi there :

I feel fairly qualified to awnser this, as i come from Kenya, and have lived there much of my life, and have been diving there for approx 17 years.

There is one good operator on the north coast (Monbasa,) called Bucaneer Diving run by a local called Bruce Phillips, you can email him at scuba@swiftmombasa.com , he has a website www.bucaneer.com (or something similar.) He runs a very slick operation, great boats and guides, good rental gear, and about a year ago he sunk a massive cargo ship outside the reef, which has now become an artificial reef and is supposed to be a great dive. Get in touch with him and let him know i put you in touch with him, he should be able to sort something out for you. Best time to go is Dec/Jan/Feb for clearest visibility, you will get away with a shorty wetsuit all year around.

He has bases in Voyager hotel (Nyali Beach,) Whitesands (Kenya beach,) and Reef Hotel (Nyali Beach.)

Hope this helps,

Bob Soper

I dove for 4 days with them back in 1997.....the same people are still running it. It was really great. I was there in August. There is a book put out by the Lonely Planet that is about Kenya Diving...I think Anton Kourof or something is the author. GET THAT BOOK. The author is/was back then friends with the people who own Wasini Island Diving so you can read up on the dive sites around Wasini as well as other parts of Kenya. And the information back then was spot on.

The only part we didn't arrange was getting from Mombosa to Wasini Island....my friend an I took a taxi there, but thankfully the owners had to pick up some people in Nairobi so we hitched a ride or not quite sure how we would have gotten back. But then that was in '97 and things probably have changed a bit.

Kenya was awesome and one trip which I would classify as a "once in a lifetime experience" !!!

I can also recommend Buccaneer diving for the norht coast.

For the south coast you should go to Wasini/Shimoni, which is a very nice region! I have dived with The Crab (quite some years ago) and that was very good.

Have fun!

Hi!

I dove in Kenya in April this year with Diani Marine and had a great time. They are flexible to the bottom time, if you have plenty of air and the information from your computer is ok, you can dive 60 minutes at least. The water temperature is 28 degrees and the best time to dive is between October and April. You can see whale sharks, dolphins, many parrots and clow fishes, very big turtles and many schools of small fishes. The coral is dead (diani beach), maybe around chale island is better. They have trips to Pemba island and day trips to wasini, which is very beautiful.
