Rent a car / self driving in Bali is not expensive; but not for everyone - the driving style is very different than in US or Europe. Chaos is the first impression of most people, but once you get the rhythms - you'll survive; and may enjoy the experience.
Public transportaion such as minibus is cheap but slow and not comfortable by western standard.
If you rent a car with driver - usually you've to provide accomodation and meals for the driver; check with the resort if they have room for driver (free or very cheap).
