AFAIK, both LP steel tanks and aluminum tanks have the same 3/4-14 NPSM thread.

The older steel 72's have a 1/2" opening.

My steel 72's from the late 60's and early 70's have 3/4-14 NPSM threads.

Older. Back in the 50's, a tapered, 1/2" valve was in use and still occasionally show up in dive shops for inspections and hydros.
