A friend of the diver who is a member here reports that the deceased was an experienced diver "celebrating the 300 th dive of a fellow diver friend."

A 56-year-old man died today after suffering from cardiovascular problems while diving off Baleeira Beach in Sesimbra, the National Maritime Authority (AMN) reported today.

The information note reports that after an alert received at 3:10 p.m. from a maritime tourism company, the crew of the Sesimbra lifeguard station immediately moved to the site and members of the lifeguard station were also transferred to the port of Sesimbra by the local command of the Maritime Police of Setúbal, of the National Institute for Medical Emergencies (INEM) and the Sesimbra Volunteer Fire Department.

“The maritime support ship for tourist divers transported the victim to the port of Setúbal, with one of the crew members of the lifeguard station performing resuscitation maneuvers throughout the journey, and it was not possible to reverse the situation,” the statement said.

The INEM doctor declared death at the port of Sesimbra and the body was later transported to the Setúbal Institute of Forensic Medicine by the Sesimbra Volunteer Fire Department.

The Maritime Police Psychology Office has been activated and is assisting the victim’s family.
