Update on this. They DID re-check the carry-on bags with a sizer box and a scale at the HNL gate. Lots of locals with old tags trying to scam them and some people were getting fined -- lots of arguing.
On the way back in Nadi I checked my too-big roller and just had a small daypack carry-on with things for the flight. They still made me weigh it and put it in the sizer even though it was obviously really small.
