I might be game. Email me the week before. I've done 10-20 dives at casino point and agree...it's a great place for your introduction to cold water. As was previously mentioned, kelp isn't so bad if you are able to keep your cool. If I can make it, I'll just take the ferry and join you on monday if you're still there and diving.

That's what I love; and going to miss, about SoCal divers. No need to pay for a dive guide because one or several of us will be glad to provide the service with no charge and big smile.

Thanks so much for the offer to be my dive guide and other suggestions. Right now, I'm planning for a shore dive, with a guide on the first dive in the morning and probably looking for a buddy there to go out for later dives in the afternoon. Night dive in Catalina is also what I'd like to explore as well, but probably paying a guide to go out if there are lifes to see during this season. For Sunday, I'd probably go out for a boat dive and Monday I'm considering whether to have a shore dive in the morning or not as I have a flight to Boston the next day at 8 AM.

You'd love the night dive at Casino Point. If you were to hire a guide from Catalina Divers Supply, then chances are you may get access to additional air tanks for more than one dive.:eyebrow:

Thanks to fnfalman for the tip.

Sound like it's a good deal to go with Catalina Divers Supply

Just curious if there is anywhere to get tank refill for night dive in the area? to me it seems like both dive shops close after 4 PM.

If you are interested in diving when the dive shops at Avalon are closed, you need to plan for this ahead of time.

In order to secure a tank for a night dive, plan on picking up a full one at the end of the dive day from the gas filling station at the UW Park. Ask the filling guys when they will be closing down for the day and inform them why you are asking (so that they know you want a tank to do a night dive). Do this in person. They have been known to close down early if business is slow on a given day.

FYI, I have known some people who then take a few quarters and stash tanks in the dive lockers until they are needed for the night dives. That seems to work out rather well. :D

Have fun!

If you're going to hire a guide from either ScubaLuv or CDS then the guide can bring pre-filled tanks with him to the park for you. With CDS, since that they run the air station at Casino Point and have storage right next to the fill station, chances are they already have pre-filled tanks right at that storage area. Just make sure that they understand you'd need tanks for night dives.

Now that the Sargassum horneri (= filicinum) has largely died out, night dives will be fun again. I stopped doing them in mid November due to the density of that d*mned stuff!

I will be there tomorrow actually. I have free dove there before but this will be my 1st time SCUBAing casino point. I'm not super experienced either but most of my dives have been here in SoCal.

My girlfriend will be with me but she has been slightly sick so i'm not sure if she'll dive with me. I'll probably see you out there. I'll be the white boy in Mares suit with the little Asian girl :)

I hope its looking good out there this weekend!

Hope you had a good time out here. The park was not very crowded (in fact relatively few divers Sunday) and conditions were pretty good (except for the cold water intrusion on Sunday, my min temp was 52 F that day vs 59 F the day before).
