Lobster Diving Rodeo Set for July 23, 2007

KEY WEST, FL, Feb. 20, 2007 – The two-day Spiny Lobster Sport Season is one of the most popular summer boating and diving events in the Florida Keys. Unfortunately, in recent years, it has become one of the most dangerous for divers. In 2006, 5 people died and many were injured in Monroe County, Florida, during the 2 days. Local marine public safety agencies say that’s too many.

“A lot of these accidents occurred in shallow water with divers forgetting very basic skills,” says Robert Guhl, a member of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team. “Most were preventable had divers reviewed skills and checked equipment properly.”

A diving safety initiative involving the U.S. Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Key West Police Department Marine Patrols, National Marine Sanctuary, Florida Keys Community College Dive Program, and others are cooperating to prevent unnecessary SCUBA diving and snorkeling deaths in the Florida Keys, especially during the “Mini” Lobster Season.

“We decided to combine our agencies’ resources to prevent accidents rather than responding to them,” says Captain Scott Buschman, Commanding Officer U.S. Coast Guard, Key West. Guhl adds, “We wanted to do it in a fun and educational way for the whole community so we created the Florida Keys Safe Diving Initiative, “Dive Alive” (also known as FKSDI).

The FKSDI includes a Lobster Diving Rodeo and Dive Safety Expo to help recreational divers refresh their dive skills and knowledge in a fun and controlled environment. The free event will occur on Monday, July 23, 2007, 2 days before Mini Lobster Season begins. It will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Dive Campus of Florida Keys Community College, 5901 College Rd., Key West, Florida.

The event will combine SCUBA and snorkeling skills stations and games with mini safety briefings. Skills stations will vary from basic mask clearing, controlled emergency swimming ascents and weight dropping to “tickling” and bagging simulated lobsters. Activities geared specifically toward children will also be included. To participate in SCUBA activities, attendees must bring a SCUBA certification card and their own gear. Air fills will be available. Non-certified divers can participate in snorkeling activities.

Mini briefings will include safe boating skills, dive flag use, proper lobster gauging, gear demos, Marine Sanctuary rules, and bends avoidance. Participants can also tour FKCC’s hyperbaric chamber facility.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Participants will be eligible for prizes, drawings and discounts from local dive shops.

New Keys Diving Initiative Touts Safety, Offers Event to Entertain and Educate

KEY WEST, Florida Keys – A multi-agency initiative, designed to enhance sport diving safety, is to be highlighted by a Lobster Diving Rodeo and Dive Safety Expo Monday, July 23, in the Florida Keys.

The free event is to be staged on the campus of Florida Keys Community College, at 5901 College Rd., in Key West, two days prior to the July 25th opening of Florida’s special two-day mini-lobster season, a time period that traditionally attracts the most divers to the Keys.

The challenge, marine officials all agree on, is that in their enthusiasm to catch the tasty Florida spiny lobster, many divers either forget or fail to exercise proper scuba diving safety measures. Failure to do so can result in diving accidents and sometime those mishaps can be catastrophic.

“A lot of accidents occur in shallow water with divers forgetting very basic skills,” says Robert Guhl, a member of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team. “Most are preventable, if divers review skills and check equipment properly.”

Dubbed “Dive ALIVE,” the dive safety initiative is a result of input from officials of the U.S. Coast Guard; Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission; Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Key West Police Department marine units; Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary; the Lower Keys Medical Center and the Florida Keys Community College dive program. The Monroe County Tourist Development Council, as well as Comcast Spotlight, are supporting measures with a communications’ program designed to reach Keys visitors.

“We decided to combine our agencies’ resources to prevent accidents so that we will have fewer tragedies to respond to on the water,” said Captain Scott Buschman, Commander Coast Guard Sector Key West.

The event is to combine scuba and snorkeling skills stations and games with mini safety briefings. Skills stations will vary from basic mask clearing, controlled emergency swimming ascents and weight dropping. There are even demonstrations designed to hone ones lobster-catching skills including “tickling” techniques and bagging simulated lobsters. Activities geared specifically toward children are also to be included.

To participate in scuba activities, attendees must bring a scuba certification card and their own gear. Air fills will be provided free of charge. Non-certified divers may participate only in snorkeling activities.

Mini briefings are to include safe boating skills, dive flag use, proper lobster gauging, gear demos, Marine Sanctuary rules, and bends avoidance. Participants can also tour FKCC’s hyperbaric chamber facility.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase and local area dive shops will provide prizes and discount coupons.

More details off the event and Dive ALIVE program, as well as a free downloadable dive safety brochure, are available at www.divealive.org. For further information, please call Dan LiBrando of the US Coast Guard at 305-292-8809.

Dear,
The members of the Florida Keys Safe Diving Initiative would like to include you and your business in our premier event. This event, the Lobster Diving Rodeo and Dive Safety Expo, will be held on Monday, July 23rd, 2007 on the FKCC Key West Campus, located at 5901 College Rd. The Rodeo will run from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. It will combine SCUBA and snorkeling skills stations and games with mini safety briefings. Any business or organization can have a booth at this Rodeo free of charge. Businesses may use the space to promote and conduct sales. The only requirement is that the booth is also used to educate. Every booth must address a boating or diving safety issue such as equipment, regulations or skills and techniques. Please see attached response sheet.
Within the past year, Monroe County has seen numerous SCUBA diving related deaths. This has prompted various public safety organizations, including Coast Guard Group Key West, Florida Keys Community College, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Key West Police Department, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, NOAA Marine Sanctuary, and the Lower Keys Medical Center to form the Florida Keys Safe Diving Initiative. The Initiative’s mission is to reduce the number of SCUBA related deaths through a program of public outreach and education.
The Dive Alive program is taking on a life of its own and is moving forward. We have produced a card with our “Dive Alive” motto to be distributed through out the keys and just finished filming an episode of Waterways scheduled to air in June. Our web page, www.divealive.org, is up and is continuing to evolve. Newspaper articles have appeared and press releases have been picked up by national publications. The cornerstone event of the initiative will be the Lobster Diving Rodeo and Dive Safety Expo.
To secure your booth space, please respond no later than Friday, June 15th, 2007.
Businesses unable to attend can also participate by extending discounts to attendees and donating prizes to be given to participants.
With your help we can make this event a success and hopefully make lobster season a little safer. For more information contact:

Thankyou to all that participated in the First Annual Lobster Rodeo.
The event was small but successful. It will continue to grow and continue to be an impact.
