We're actually going to be flying out on the 24th and are hoping to get some diving in on the 22nd and 23rd. Since we're still pretty noobish we'll probably go to OE Xpress by La Jolla and do one of their familiarization dives then explore that area.

Not being from the area, that sound like a reasonable idea to us. Though taking a boat out sounds appealing too.... sigh... must... decide... soon.... :)
I have not had a chance to dive La Jolla (tried a few times but weather didn't permit) The coranados is a bit of a boat trip but very nice, easy diving. I believe it is listed as beginner on the Lois Ann website. There were hundreds of sea lions playing with us last time I went, and I guess there's a plain wreck (didn't find it last time) that is in shallow water... again, if you want to go, you have an insta buddy here who will look after you and not ditch ya.
