AS a new diver I am interested in accurately assessing the depth and visibilty of the dives I undertake. Without a computer is there a way of getting a close estimate or is it just experience?

You can get a depth guage which can be console mounted or wrist mounted. These are typically Bourdon tube instruments of various design.

Visibility is mostly by your judgement unless its less than 3 feet/1 meter.

Seems like I recall a discussion on visibility last year so you may want to try doing a search for that topic.

Do not dive without either a computer or a depth gauge and a watch/bottom timer. If you use the depth gauge and watch/bottom timer combination it's a very good idea to have a depth guage with a maximum depth indicator. Visibility is nice to know, knowing your depth is critical.
