It's not that I don't "trust" someone else to service my gear, the simple fact is that I live in a fairly remote area of Indonesia where there are no local dive shops. So, I'm hoping that somebody can help me out here. I've got a Genesis Phantom bcd problem that has reared its ugly head on my last day of diving. The power inflator is spittin' bubbles through the actuator button. It's still usable, but seemed to really go through a bit of air in a hurry.

I've looked through the threads here, tried looking at the BCD manual, and tried searching for a repair manual to tell me if this power inflator is gonna explode into peices if I try opening it up. I had a similar problem in the past with a Tusa bcd, but was able to just switch out an old inflator from a bcd that had gone the way of all bcds. The low pressure hose bib (Schrader valve?) has a hex base on it (unlike my other bcd), so it appears that it can be taken off, but I'd like to hear from someone with a little experience first. Maybe I don't even need to touch that since that's not where the bubbles are coming from. The button seems to have a bushing of some sort down inside that has a groove on each side (looks like it could be for a specialized wrench). Anybody know if these inflators are servicable, and if so, can I get any directions on how to keep it alive?

Thanks a ton.

Hello Mekmike,

I'll not familiar with your exact inflator, but here is a bit of info you may find helpful. If not, then post a picture of your unit an perhaps we can help you sort it out.

Instructions with pictures can be found here:

Here is a link to a PDF manual for a Halcyon inflator-very similar to most. www.halcyon.net/files/manuals/halcyon_inflator04_v1.pdf
Parts can be found here:

Edit: I found this old recall notice: http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/news/Article.aspx?newsid=366

I am not familiar with the Genesis inflator so a picture might help. In any case, the 2 grooves in the metal ring around the button are for a special tool used to unscrew the power inflate mechanism from the body. Start with a long FW soak as there is often corrosion and salt on those threads that make them very hard to turn even with the special tool. Picture of the tool and instruction on the DSS site. I fashioned my own but at the price from DSS it is better to buy. Once you unscrew the mechanism, you will find a number of o-rings. One of those closest to the button is leaking (should be on on shaft and one sealing assembly to the case. This recent thread has some pictures of what you should find when you disassemble it: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/bu...149-inflator-maintenance-my-orings-bunch.html Best is to simply replace all while you are in there. And, of course, clean up all the crud that has built up in there and probably caused the o-ring failure. If you order the tool from DSS, might as well pick up the flusher connection he makes and avoid the crud build up in the future.

HUGE thanks to both of you COUV and AWAP!! Excellent information, and I appreciate you both taking the time to help me out. Can't wait to get it fixed.

No problem, please keep us posted on your findings.
