I suggest that you find a good Hogarthian instructor and start diving doubles. Find out what you can spend. strating out with a SS/BP and wings is a good step.

A lot of snorkels get lost on wreck dives by newbies. So skip the snorkel or stow a flexible one away in your BC pocket.

Any good books to recommend on the wreck specialty?

The TDI manual offers a lot of information about wreck diving even if your only doing your basic wreck course. BTW the metal cage over your valves is so you dont damage your valves or your regs in caves and wrecks.

I agree with Aquahump-find a good Hogarthian instructor/mentor, get comfortable in the water, and start diving wrecks with an experienced buddy who will show you the ropes. You might want to try DIR-F..... Never know when you might need sea ninja training
