If you're planning on camping in the keys as a backup plan, I'd recommend getting a reservation for the state parks (Pennekamp, Long Key, Bahia Honda now. You can always cancel if you don't need it. They fill up fast Jan-Feb-Mar

Stay at Pat's (MsParamadic) Most people seem to, its right in Key Largo and she even does your washing :)

You have lots of good options for diving. If you're set on the Keys, then go to Key Largo...there's pretty much a dive shop on every corner. Chris at Silent World (who posted above) will take good care of you for sure. Since most people diving there are traveling, pretty much all your boat trips include tanks and air in the price.

If you want to stay near Ft Lauderdale, there's a LOT of good wrecks off Pompano and some really nice reef a little further north at Boynton. You'll have to rent tanks separately, but most of the boats will have them available. There's also good beach diving in a few areas.

Enjoy.
