Whatever the brand, I would go with a diaphram reg due to the cold and sediment issues you mentioned.

As for the brand to get, ScubaPro and Apeks would be my top choices. Zeagle seems to have a loyal following as well.
 
I have an ATX50 and am very happy with my choice.
When I test dove the SP it seemed to blow air into
my mouth and I really didn't like that.....some people
do. Just test out as many as you can and go with
the one you like the best and can get serviced
easily in your area.
 
I use the Zeagle Flathead VI with the ZX 2nd stage. I tried several different regulators and this set up worked the best for me. I would look at all the Zeagle modles because they are all enviromentally sealed and they are all great breathers. Check out Zeagles web site for specifications and information.

It's a personal choice. Demo as many as you can. What works best for you is what you need to buy. Also the backing of a good LDS is also important when it comes to service. There are a lot of good regulators on the market. Good luck in finding one that will work for you.
