To sum it all up black has 4k, 2.7k. and everything lower the Silver has 1080p at the same speed as the black and the white (lowest) has it 1 level lower. If your going to spend the money black is what you want. 3+ or 4 however if you want 4k then take a snapshot of the video to get a nice picture it looks way better that way the hero 4 is the way to go. If you just do 1080p then 3 is fine. You can always downconvert 4k footage to 1080p and it looks better so it depends on what you want. 4k adds so much detail when you have a moniter or tv that can see it. Even a 1080p moniter you can see more detail.

FWIW,
The HERO 4 Silver supports:
4k @ 15 & 12.5 fps (3840x2160) screen resolution
2.7k @ 30,25 & 24 fps (2704x1520) screen resolution

The HERO 4 Black supports the same resolutions at different frame rates:
4k @ 30,25 & 24 fps
2.7k @ 50,48,30,25, & 24 fps

For screen grabs the higher the fps the less motion blur you will encounter.
To me, the 4 silver is a better buy with the built in LCD display since most 2k & 4k videos will be down converted and played back at 1080 or less.
Shooting 4k @30 fps or 1080 @ 120 fps for $499 is amazing anyway you look at it.
