I guess I should have. I was confusing them with hybrid striped bass, which are incapable of reproducing with other hybrid striped bass.

Masterphil:
I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that rainbow's are a genetic hybrid and are incapable of breeding. Something you might want to look up.
Actaully, there is a sterile breed of trout called Triploid. Triploid trout have three sets of chromosomes rather than the normal (diploid) number of two sets, so they are unable to reproduce.

Also, there is the Splake. Splake are sterile trout that are developed by crossing a brook trout and a lake trout. Hence the name. However, the Brook Trout and the lake trout are both actually char, so not related to rainbows.

I use about 1-2 drops of Oil of Cloves per gallon of water whenever I have to pull a koi out of my pond to examine it. Works great. The fish is sedated for 10 - 15 minutes. Use sparingly, or it will kill the fish.

The correct material for this job is MS-222

Not clove oil, or leaves, or any other "home remedies".

You will need to be absolutely sure not to spill it in the river. You may also wish to contact the local WDFW office and discuss what you're doing so if an enforcment officer stumbles across your filming he/she doesn't go ballistic.

Best of luck

Richard

You can also get it from Sigma and if I remember correctly, it's a bit cheaper than finquel.
