...it encourages us to travel to desolate, third-world countries that nobody in their right mind would visit if it weren't for diving (i.e. Bonaire) and stimulates the local economy through tourism.

Plus, you get to experience and swap stories only a small percentage of the world's population could possibly understand full and appreciate (Whale sharks! Which, unfortunately, I haven't experienced yet)
