How does one avoid a Trust Me dive ??

If we do our best to know what conditions we're diving in, be prepared as far as knowledge and skills and plan the dive then it isn't a trust me dive.

As Mike says, doing new things and expanding your diving "envelope" aren't necessarily "trust-me" dives. A propper plan will include the information you need before you ever get in the water to make sound decisions on the dive.
That does not mean, however, that you can plan enough to make it ok to violate safe practices. Pressing beyond thirds on a "trust-me" circuit in a cave comes to mind...

Ultimately, you have to set your own rules. You know yourself better than anyone, good judgment is the key.
