Not completely true. I'm a TDI HOG Regulator Service Clinic instructor. This is a class that is sanctioned by HOG through TDI and does teach how to service HOG regulators. I'm teaching this course again in about a week and a half.

+1

The Hog Repair Clinic is a two-day affair and it does cover how to service your regs... as far as I know, TDI and HOG are the only companies to allow users to learn the basics and buy the service kits.

Course is $250 which includes a service manual

The only way you will learn how to service any scuba gear is by taking a course through the manufacture. Liability is the concern. All the PADI, TDI, etc is for field serving and a greater understanding of how the gear works.

I done lernt everything I need to fix a regulader and my udder gears on da internet.

That is to say the above statement is utter rubbish. If you are mechanically inclined and has the right tools servicing your own gear it not that hard. Having the knowledge to trouble shoot is more difficult. Many of the mfg "courses" are really seminars that demonstrate the basics but in 2 hours not much more. If you are working at a shop yes one needs to have taken the mfg "course" to satisfy some basic liability requirements but gives little hands on experience.

As posted above this book: Airspeed Press Homepage - Books For Serious Divers and this book: Regulator Savvy (Spiral Bound) will give you more info than needed on regulators. Then get the mfg manuals: http://www.frogkick.dk/manuals.

Also as said the info the equipment course is something one should really cover in a basic OW course. If you want to learn about it ask a tech at a local shop if you can hang out and watch. Bring a six pack for the BS session afterwards.

Q -
How indepth is PADI equipment specialist?

A - Depends on the instructor

It can also depend on the student.

I had one student take the class a while back that told me she signed up for it for two reasons: refresh how to assemble gear before a dive and get another card on the way to her MSD. She had no real desire to learn anything past putting her gear together and go through a buddy check. I was able to get a bit more in there, despite that.

Before any assumption is made about the shop just taking her money, the shop mgr clearly explained that a scuba refresher is much more appropriate and less costly way to go over gear assembly & buddy check. It doesn't count as a specialty, though, which was half of what this person wanted. She left happy, and has been an active diver - which is what matters anyway.

Of course that's just a silly notion.
