If it's a mud or sand bottom then a simple screw auger works. I used this method for open water water classes to tie off a float / dive flag tube that also served to hold a few extra weights if needed.

If you’re diving from a boat in navigational waterways you better be using a certified Dive Flag and float. Or an Alpha flag in international waters.

The Clove Hitch, secured by two half hitches, is easily loosened.View attachment 835051

Clove hitch is a very nice knot.......but for the small diameters of SMB or DSMB lines I'd just use a bolt snap wrapped around the "branch" and then secured back to the main line.

For heavier lines like anchor lines or mooring lines from 3/8 up to 3/4.......my go to knot on my boat is almost always the bow-line with a single half hitch as a safety. I believe that the bow-line is the "KING" of ALL knots...... but that's just me... :) I'm the guy on the left!

I use an inflatable torpedo shaped float with a Dive Flag sticking up on top of it. I put some fishing sinker weights under it to keep it upright even in wind. It's attached to a small spool that is attached to my wrist with a bungee cord. It's fairly low drag and can be got rid of quick if it gets snagged.

I have two different SMB's that I use, depending on if I'm on canned air or snorkel air. For canned air, I use the open bottom SMB so I can fill it with the regulator air. For snorkeling, I use one with a blow up valve in it.
