Search underway for missing diver in Humber Bay - CityNews Toronto
The Toronto police marine unit is searching Humber Bay for a missing scuba diver.

Police say they were called to the area of Humber Bay Park West and Lakeshore Boulevard near the Etobicoke Yacht Club around 8 p.m. Sunday.

Toronto Fire say two divers went into the water and only one of them resurfaced.

Paramedics say the man was treated and is in stable condition.

This is starting to sound curious... Recovered diver was only wearing shorts and a T-shirt (plus dive gear I assume). Friends that dove there that day tell me that the was was warm (21°C/70°F) but for diving, that's a tad chilly...

I know some divers from up north who are fine in shorts while I have to have a little protection. Tolerance varies with folks, especially those from tundra climes and/or extra adipose loading, or maybe he was a newbie who just didn't allow enough.

Just for reference, FINA et al swimming pool temperature standard is 25C at the lowest. That's for athletes who, on one hand spend hours in the pool in speedos and get used to the temperature, but on the other hand pump out a lot of body heat to keep themselves warm.

Sure. But it certainly isn't typical. I can't recall EVER seeing someone dive up here (i.e. Great Lakes) diving in shorts and a T-shirt. I'm sure it happens, but I'm also certain it isn't remotely "normal" or typical.

Wondering if the OUC (Ont. Underwater Council) is looking in to this fatality?

I remember as a kid we would wait till the local pool warmed up to 54F before we went swimming. Yes! that is about 12C. I would not want to dive Humber Bay without exposure protection though.
