treading is where you are in one spot and you have to keep above water.. right? And when you are swimming the distance you have to swim for the certification do you have a mask snorkel and fins on? or nothing? I hope i dont :flame: the test , or i make and get :jaws: from a dive spot. eek
 
yeah, tread is just to stay in place. you can float on your back too, at least with
PADI

also with PADI, you have to swim 200 yards without mask, snorkel, or fins.

or you can swim 300 yards with them

there's no time requirement. take your time.
