LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA — — Authorities have identified the man who drowned Tuesday evening as he was kayaking off the shore of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.
He was George Yuantei Tsai, 36, of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.
Tsai was about 50 yards offshore in rough surf when his kayak capsized and he drowned, officials said.
Bystanders in the 4100 block of El Mar Drive witnessed the kayak tipping over shortly after 6:30 p.m., and one man dove into the water and pulled Tsai to the beach, said Broward Sheriff's Office spokesman Mike Jachles.
A vacationing doctor from Maryland happened upon the chaotic beach scene and performed CPR on Tsai, but he died later at Holy Cross Hospital, Jachles said.
