How long do you keep them? Do you have to hold a specific length of time or is there a safe point to clear the files?

I keep mine until the statute of limitations runs out. Typically 7 years.

While were at it....any body move to or try digital releases? Such as IPad or Android device?

The statute of limitations on what?
Depending on the crime/infraction it can be as short as a year or as long as never.

7 years seems quite reasonable to me, but did an actual maritime lawyer recommend this?

I keep mine for seven years. You just never know these days. Who knows what happens even after customers are long gone from the dock.

Florida has a 4 year statute on personal injury. I scan mine into a PDF file so if they fade I can always have a copy.
