The first lion fish was caught by divers in Venezuela on January 3rd, 2010. The catch took place at Cayo Norte, a popular diving site located in Morrocoy National Park waters. The specimen is a juvenile fish and was taken to Valencia aquarium for further study.
Since late 2009 unconfirmed reports had been circulating in Venezuela the about lion fish sights at Morrocoy National Park and, also, at Los Roques archipelago. However, for the first time, the elusive fish not only was seen, but actually the divers were able to capture it during a night dive.
For those of you interested in this incident from the environment conservation viewpoint, the coordinates of Cayo Norte are Latitude: 10 degree, 51 minutes NORTH; Longitude: 68 degree, 23.6 minutes, WEST.
