Hello all,
Four of us are going to Hawaii in May. 1 week in Maui and 1 week on the Big Island. I would like to get some suggestions on what dive shops to use. We will be planning on taking a number of boat dive trip as well as doing to shore diving. So I need to know where to rent tanks for shore diving as well as boat diving. Any suggestions would be nice. We like to dive a lot, maybe 3-4 dives a day. Thanks for your help in advance.

Eric

When on the Big Island, where are you going to be staying? Kona or Hilo? One very important thing to remember is that a trip to the other side of the island will take you over 1000'. On the Kona side, I have not heard any truly negative things about any dive shop. Jacks is my shop of choice. They have unlimited tanks for the price of one. If you are smart about your diving you can get 5-6 dives a day. On Hilo side the only shop that I have experience with is Nautilus. The other shop is new and I have not worked with them yet, but they do rent kayaks and DPV's. Hopefully the Kona side surf will have died down by May.

Where are you staying on Maui? It makes a difference since there's a 45min. drive between West Maui and South Maui.

Often recommended here on SB:

Lahaina
Lahaina Divers
Extended Horizons

Kihei
B&B Scuba
Ed Robinsons
Mike Severns

There's more also. Maui is a competitive market so the bad ones don't last long.

About 1/2 of the Maui Dive shops rent tanks. Also Maui Dreams Dive Co. in Kihei.
For escorted shore diving in the Kihei area try Shaka Doug. (Shaka Divers)

I put up a Yelp review recently too. I'm an experience diver, and the Scuba Shack is the rudest dive shop I've ever dove with, unbelievable. Don't give them your business. I live in Maui and have dove with a good number of shops. B&B Scuba is top rated, followed by Maui Dreams. Diving will always be good here- it's the crew you go with and the atmosphere they create for you that makes a difference. :)

My full Yelp review of Scuba Shack in Kihei:

Do not go diving with this dive shop. The captain and owner are so rude. I went because the price is comparable, and it was the only boat with open spots (which probably should have been a sign). The boat and equipment were fine. It was the service that wasn't, and the unfriendly attitude that the crew gave off. To be frank, the captain was a total bit*h and the owner catered to her.

The dive trip was conducted the way THEY wanted to, without any flexibility to accommodate the guests. I'm not talking about the technical parts of diving. I'm talking about when hanging out on the boat, during which the customers were made to feel like unwanted guests. Their tone was like that used towards unruly children

examples:
I have hip problems. I made the owner, whom was my dive guide, aware I'd be slower swimming- nothing drastic, just need to stop and look at stuff every 5, 10 minutes instead of straight swimming. His reply: "then you better remember where the boat is. I can't cater to you. Better yet, you should just go with the other group"

several customers were chatting at the end of the trip, and the captain began to talk about how we can go online and write a review. She interrupted the divers, told them to be quiet: "maybe YOU think you've heard this before, but you haven't, and I can't concentrate with people buzzing around", and goes on to rattle about the 2 dollar discount they could get at the store. when finished, she says; "ok, you may talk now."

When I took off my wetsuit between dives, I was asked "why"- I had to explain i like to dry off during surface intervals. The captain's reply: "well usually we let people take wetsuits off down to their waists- but if you want to try and get back into a cold clammy wetsuit, then suit yourself and by all means!" She then proceeded to hand the wetsuit to me as I was still eating during the break to put it back on

Another example: fellow diver was about to get a breakfast portion. Captain decides she wants to take photos of the divers and tells him to pose. He says he'd like to get a bagel, her reply: "well ok then, suit yourself"

Don't give them any business. It's ridiculous the divers had to pay and put up with this.

What was the Captain's name that day? I'm in the process of updating the mini-reviews of various operators from my 2 year old post: One Diver's Opinion of Dive Ops

I was wondering if I should remove from my review the sentence "Due to crowded boat, an awkward exit gate, and weird vibes from the owner, it isn't one of my favorites."

It appears that the comment should remain.

I rented an AL100, weights and dive flag from B&B last year. Don't remember what they cost, do remember I thought it was very reasonable.

I have dived with B&B and Ed Robinson(ERD) out of the Kihei ramp. Both are great operators. ERD has a three tank dive that I enjoyed. We did Molokini reef's end and two dives closer to the shore. The Molokini dive is a drift dive with no anchor line. If buoyancy and drift is not an issue, it was a great dive. Lots of critters, some rare, nudis and a few sharks, mostly white tip makes it a great dive.

This year I will dive with ERD, B&B and Shaka Doug, plus a few shore dives. Been really looking forward to getting my ears wet. Last dive was Aug 22, 2011 since we are -4 F this morning. Splashed in the pool twice this week with an OW class just to remember what I have been missing.

Hope you have a great trip.
Aloha

Shoot me a PM if you are going to be staying in the Waikoloa area ( Marriott, Hilton, Fairway Villas etc.) I can hook you up with a local shop. Small groups, great dive sites, all the gear you need!!

So I need to know where to rent tanks for shore diving as well as boat diving.
For South Maui (Kihei/Wailea/Makena) three good sources of tanks are
B&B Scuba
Maui Dreams Dive Co, ; and
Maui Dive Shop

The links above should take you directly to the price lists for rental gear.
With 4 people in your group and doing multple dives, you will probably arrange for tank cards. B&B is the cheapest $4 per tank, $35 per 10 tank rental card.

In the big picture of things, the tank costs are all relatively low, and I typically use the most expensive one ... Maui Dive Shop at $55 per 10 tanks, simply because it saves me a couple of mile trip each way. The only drawback is that the local branch at Kamaole Shopping Center (better known as Denny's plaza) is right next to the best cinnamon roll shop in town, and it is rare that I return my tank after diving without stopping for a cinnamon roll. Calories right after diving don't count. Right?
